If you’re looking to improve your home decor, this is the post for you. We aren’t taught how to decorate in school (unless you go on to do a course on interior design, that is) so it can be tough to know exactly what to do to give your home the ‘wow’ factor. A lot of people just buy things that they believe match well and hope for the best. Below, we’ll give you some quick ideas you can use to add interest to your home decor. Take a look!
Mix Up Your Furniture
Here’s a tip that a lot of people don’t know: you don’t have to match your furniture. Shock! Many people just go out and buy a matching set because they think it’s easier and the ‘done’ thing, however, your home can look even better and more interesting if you choose to mix up your furniture instead. You can still have an element that brings it all together, such as a color or a style, but they don’t have to be from the same set.
Add Plants And Flowers
Plants and flowers can make any home look great. They bring in texture and interest, as well as color. They can also help to purify the air and make us happier when we look at them. What more could you want from a home accessory?
Don’t Forget Your Artwork
Artwork is key if you want to add interest to just about any home decor. Of course, this doesn’t mean going out and picking any old piece of artwork. You need to take your time and select something that you really like. This could mean commissioning something from a local artist or somebody you’ve found on Instagram, or it could even mean making your own piece of artwork. Many people like to display multiple pieces on a ‘gallery wall’.
I picked up this print at the thrift store. I actually purchase most of my artwork from perusing my local thrift stores!
Mix Colors And Patterns
Colors and patterns can be mixed and clashed too – you don’t need to go for a cohesive color palette every time. You can use a color wheel to give you an idea of the colors that clash well and those that don’t look so great together. In terms of patterns, you can make any pattern look great by using the rule of three. Use one pattern 60%, use another 30%, and finally, choose one to use 10%. If you do this, almost anything can work. You can even incorporate patterns in unexpected places, such as on your windows with the help of vinyl window film installation. Get creative!
Use A Variety Of Materials In Your Decor
As you design your decor, you should also think carefully about the materials that you use. Using lots of different materials will make your home look cosier and far more interesting. Hardwood floors, a shaggy rug, faux leather elements, and other materials can all work well together.
Show Off Your Personality
Don’t be afraid to show off your personality – incorporate souvenirs from vacations, things to do with your hobbies, and anything else that you’re proud to show off. Have fun and remember – a home should feel collected, not decorated!
