I am working on the Drexel Triune Dresser and tried a new color combo – General Finishes Lamp Black with their Winter White Glaze. It looks pretty neat!

What happens if you do not like what you applied both paint and glaze….do you have to sand off and restart?
You can just paint directly over the glaze and start again – I’ve done that many a time

I LOVE THIS. I’ve always wondered what would happen if you whitewashed over black and have been too chicken to try it. I love this look and will have to go pick up the winter white glaze.

I’m really liking the winter white over lamp black. I usually work with white wax and haven’t done much with glazes but this has inspired me to think twice about that. Looking forward to seeing the dresser when it’s finished Suzanne.
Oh my goodness, you just saved me! I finished painting a piece today that I wanted to try using a glaze on for the first time – thank you for the tip about applying a topcoat first, otherwise I would have saved the topcoat for last!!
You are so welcome! If you ever get a chance, you should read my post about glaze and wax. I applied the glaze directly onto chalk paint and it was a disaster! I ended up re-doing the whole thing (the Florence dresser). Good luck with your piece!
Hi Suzanne, thanks for the info. I’m working on a little end table; painted Antique White with a Java Gel top. Gotta go put that top coat on to get it ready for the Van Dyke glaze. Have a great Saturday.
Do I need a final coat of wax or sealer after the glaze has dried?
Hi Linda – actually, you don’t have to seal it but I would recommend it as a strong finish. You should use GF High Performance sealer (not wax). Cheers!
Which do you like better–flat or satin?
I always go for the flat – it is very forgiving with brush strokes. If you want a more “glam” look, go for the satin.
I prefer flat – more forgiving and I am not a huge fan of sheen. Cheers!
I am using General Finishes products for the first time and this video is extremely helpful. I am using Basil with the winter white glaze. How extensive was the prep on the dresser? I am trying to achieve the same color you got on the dresser used in the GF product brochure. You seemed to have gotten more of a gray than I have. Can you give me any advice?
Hi Sonny, the prep was not extensive. I just wiped it down to clean off any dirt. I didn’t use a sealer prior to adding the glaze. That may make a big different. I put it straight onto the paint and wiped it in. I hope that helps!
