I have been so busy all week working on the Duncan Phyfe Dining Table. I took a few pics to share (I apologize if the quality isn’t tops but I took them with my phone). The table base is done! I used Annie Sloan Old Ochre as a base coat and then applied a wash of Old White. It was distressed and waxed and now its fabulous detail really pops. The feet were lightly brushed with paint and then distressed. I happen to love how the metal is peeking through. I hope you can see the variant of color in the pictures.
I’m working on the table’s top next week. Have a great weekend!

It’s turning out beautifully! Will you strip the top completely before refinishing it, or are you using gel stain to help freshen it up? I have the exact same style table (it’s made by Heritage) & we’ve had for 30 years. It’s in pristine condition, but it looks old and stodgy….I’d love to give it an “uplift” but I can’t bring myself to doing it! I’ve been Pinning sets with mahogany tables in their natural finish, and painted chairs….and they look quite charming…Maybe I’ll go that route…Anyway, your project looks fabulous! (As usual!)

Hi Robin – I used GF gel stain to freshen it up and make the top richer (java gel). It tones the red down as it needs to coordinate with her new kitchen cabinets in her new house. I must say, the richer top looks fab against the lighter base. You of all people are scared to touch our table?! LOL!

Beautiful! But I can’t believe you paint in your dining room (or living room?). I’d be afraid of having paint everywhere!
Suzanne
It just is so huge and heavy that it made sense to do it in place. We rolled up the rug and I was very careful lol! Not a lot of sanding required so it turned out ok 🙂

What a beautiful table. I’m with Vicki @ Entriways I would have paint all over the house. I can’t wait to see the top.

Suzanne is doing this table for us. It looks great so far! What a change. And I am here to say that she does not spill a drop of paint!!!

Just lovely, as always! Can I ask what you use, underneath, as a drop cloth? It’s very interesting!
Suzanne
Hi Bobbie – We rolled up the carpet and that is the old rug mat underneath! It does look like a strange dropcloth lol!

I got a DP table with leaves and 4 chairs at an estate sale for $15! Trouble is, the tabletop veneer is coming off, and is chipped in places. Any ideas on how to treat this tabletop? If I remove the veneer the wood surface below looks like it needs quite a bit of sanding. The legs are in good shape, so I’m thinking of keeping them wood tone. Trying to figure a direction for my table…love your color choices!
Suzanne
Hi Claire, If the veneer is really bad, then you likely will need to go with wood putty to fill it. If it is just peeling in places, I suggest a strong glue to re-adhere it to the base. The problem with removing all of the veneer is that it is an unknown underneath and a ton of work if you don’t like it. You may have to paint the top after filling/sanding. There are stainable wood putties out there but I have never had much luck with them. Best of luck!
