I’ve spent the past few days working hard to transform a very old empire chest into a “new” piece for my client. We decided on red and it is shaping up to be a true beauty! I am using the new General Finishes chalk style paint for this project. The color is just divine – Rembrandt Red!
This is the part of the project where I really get my hands dirty! I have applied many layers of wood putty, sanded it back and then repeated the process. It was necessary to fill in many spots where the veneer had broken off.
Here’s a quick little video on safety for you all to see 🙂 I’ll be back later today for the link party!

I really like the new site design Suzanne. I especially like moving to your name – noone can steal that! It will always be The Painted Drawer but you ARE the TPD so it makes sense to put yourself up front.
Suzanne
Thanks you so much, Linda! I thought the same thing about no one can steal it lol!

Like Linda M said I like your new site also. I have used red chalk paint before and I found it difficult to work with, my experience was that when I waxed it a great deal of red came of on the rag. Cyn

Thanks, Cyn! It is under construction (which means whenever I have 5 minutes to spare I try working on it lol)! The only red chalk paint that I’ve used in the past is AS Burgundy and also her Primer Red. We shall see with this paint as it is different to AS and is a lot thinner. It definitely needs more coats to cover but isn’t as thick to wax.

Hey Suzanne. I really like the new site design too and that you’re using your name as the prominent logo. The black and gold text is a great choice too. Beautiful style! – Vicki @ EntriWays

Thanks, Vicki!

Hi Suzanne. May I offer a tip?? I’ve done many of these missing veneer dressers. Whenever I have large spots to fill, I find using bondo is the way to go. It’s easy to spread and super easy to sand. The advantage is that it doesn’t shrink and you can spread it on in big globs, yes that’s the technical term! (spreading wood filler in a giant blob doesn’t work and I find you have to do it in steps). I actually did a waterfall desk w/bondo and it came out silky smooth. here is the link if you want to see….http://makemeprettyagain.blogspot.com/2012/04/horrendous-waterfall-desk.html
Love that new red color! Can’t wait to see what it looks like. Thanks for the link party too!
