I mentioned before how the weather has finally broken in Maryland – whew! We have cooler evenings and my kids even need jackets in the morning on the way to the bus. I was in the mindset of fall when I decided to go with General Finishes Somerset Gold on this piece.
The Autumnal Inspired Dresser before.
There was no way I was about to paint this gorgeous grain. I went with Minwax Dark Walnut stain to give it a rustic look.
The original brass hardware has great dark patina and looks very pretty against the mustard color. I highlighted the detailing in Martha Stewart gold and distressed it to allow it to pop. I really love this color. I think you can see from the pictures how the color lightens and deepens depending on the light.
The Painted Drawer Link Party later! Trying to fit a lot into one day 🙂

Was the paint waxed or sealed in any way? Love the color!
Suzanne
Hi Becky, yes it is sealed in General Finishes High Performance sealer in their matte finish.

Isn’t it funny how our surroundings inspire us? It’s been too warm here to settle into fall…as a result, I seem to still be in green, blue, and gray mode! Lovely work, Susan! : )
Suzanne
Yes, it really does! I always go for the grays and blues so this is a little different for me – must be that fresh air 🙂
Debi Carser
I LOVE the color! I think you distressed it perfectly! Not to much, not to little, just right! (lol)

Thank you so much, Debi!

Perfection!! I had a feeling you were going to use dark walnut but the paint color was a surprise…a pleasant surprise. Love that color!
Suzanne
Thanks, Marie! I also love this color but it is hard to find the right piece for it!

Normally I would not like the mustard color, but you showed me how beautiful it can be. I am glad that you did not paint the top. Awesome job!
Suzanne
Thank you, Cyn! The mustard takes the right piece – it definitely is not for every piece but I hope this one can handle it.

Beautiful — very surprised though — thought for sure you were going to go with the emerald AS color! 😀 Glad to read Autumn has hit your area!

I am ready to stain a tea cart which also has a beautiful grain. I removed all the old finish and hand sanded. I considered using the dark walnut stain. I was hesitate because I was afraid the dark walnut would be so dark that the grain would not show through. Your piece of furniture shows me that was wrong. So dark walnut stain it will be. I also like the mustard color. My tea cart will be walnut with the handle and wheel spokes black.
Suzanne
Hi Gloria – may I suggest that you do a regular walnut first? You can always darken a stain but can never really lighten it. Better safe than sorry! It also depends with the dark on how you apply it. I do one coat and then wipe it off quickly so it doesn’t darken while sitting on the wood. Best of luck!
Gloria Tulip
Thanks. I’ll follow your advice.
