Retaining walls
Many gardens around the country boast retaining walls. They have become a common structure because they offer a lot to the outdoor area; beauty, practicality, and an added dimension.
If you are planning on building a retaining wall outside your home, the first thing you will need to do is decide on what material you are going to use. In general, you can select between timber, concrete or stone. If you have decided on concrete blocks, read on to discover how to build your landscape retaining wall…
The first thing you need to do is mark out where your wall is going to sit. Most people tend to use stakes and strings to do this. Once you have done this you then need to make sure you dig your trench. Make sure it is wide enough for the material being placed inside. With regards to depth, anything between eight and 12 inches tends to be recommended.
You then need to ensure the trench is level and firm. There are various materials you can use for this. Crushed rock is a popular choice. Now you can begin by placing your concrete blocks side by side. Obviously you will need to make sure you level each one as you go. Stack your blocks in a pattern that alternates as you go up level by level.
Many landscapers recommend that you should put fabric in between the blocks you are using and the actual dirt. The reason for this is that the blocks will not get dirty once the dreaded rainy weather descends. You can then use rock to fill in the space between the two.
