I hope you all have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! Here is an article to share all about interior design mistakes. I am guilty of too much clutter and not adequate lighting so it did hit home for me. We are (hopefully) installing more dimmer switches and recessed lighting in our home this year. Any tips on the right size recessed lighting to use for our family room?
Your home is your castle and the way that you decorate it is so important. If you don’t have a welcoming and relaxing space to call your own, it can have a serious impact on your life. When the place isn’t decorated in the way that you like without your own specific style, it just doesn’t really feel like home. But a lot of people feel that way even after they’ve decorated because they don’t get it quite right. Interior design is tough and there so many small details that you have to consider, so it’s fairly easy to go wrong without even realizing it. These are some of the more common interior design mistakes that you’re probably making.
Taking On Too Much
If you’re decorating a single room with a fresh coat of paint and a few new pieces of furniture, you can handle that on your own just fine. But a lot of people struggle because they take on too much and they don’t really know what they’re doing. If you hate the way that a room looks and you want to give it a complete overhaul or maybe you want to redesign the entire house from top to bottom, that’s a massive task to take on. In those situations, it might be best to hire an interior design company to give you some advice. They will be able to give you more guidance and help you to make better design decisions so, even though it’s an extra expense, the end result will be well worth it.
Over Filling Rooms
Empty rooms are not enjoyable to spend time in because they don’t feel comfortable but a lot of people go too far the other way and over fill rooms. It’s okay to have a little open space in a room because it stops it from feeling cluttered. It’s important to remember that less is more and you don’t want a room that is over filled. Try to spend more time thinking about the layout of the room and which pieces of furniture and ornaments will compliment each other well. You need to make sure that you don’t get carried away when you’re shopping, or you’ll end up buying everything that you like but honestly don’t need and then trying to find somewhere to put it later. This always leads to cluttered rooms. Be careful at HomeGoods!
Only Using One Light Source
Lighting is one of the most important aspects in the design of any room. By altering the lighting, you can change the atmosphere so much but a lot of people don’t take advantage of this. If you just have one main light source in the room, you don’t have any freedom to play with the lighting. In this case, try to add a few lamps and maybe a dimmer switch if possible. Simple changes to the lighting can create a drastically different atmosphere in the room so it makes it a lot more functional. I like to find lamps at thrift stores and change them up with paint and new shades.
If you’re making these simple mistakes, they can have a big impact on the end result when decorating a room, so make sure to avoid them.
Enjoy your weekend!

I have six inch LED lights with dimmers in my kitchen. You may want smaller tfor a living room. These lights are extremely easy to install–no cans in the ceiling! They come in daylight (the ones I bought for my kitchen) and also a natural light that is a softer version recommended for living rooms and bedrooms. You NEVER change a bulb-you just replace the light. They last a very long time. You do need switches for LED lights so will have to change those out, too.
