I am finished with my family room Christmas decor! I scored a few vintage sleds last year at a thrift store and added them to the hearth. On the mantle, I added our little nutcrackers and other decorations. It is a tad busy, not very “designery” (I know that is not a word) but it fits my family and hey, it’s our family room! It’s comfy and cheery.
Just for those that don’t remember, here is the “before” or our room…
Here it is today!
I posted my whitewashed brick hearth onto Hometalk and many people (I mean a ton) commented that I should spray paint the brass fireplace surround. I still like it brass and especially how it looks at Christmas.
I missed last week’s link party and will be back tonight with a new link up!
Here’s what most people don’t realize… The warm gold tones of brass are coming back in style.. I’ve seen several high profile designers using brass again. I think your fireplace looks great.
Thanks Laura and I agree – I think it may be making a comeback. Everything goes in circles. I bet in a few years brushed nickel will be “out”!
Looks great Suzanne!
Thanks, Marie!
So cheery and fun, Suzanne!! I say embrace the brass …. it’s a very slippery slope … if you sprayed it, then door handles would start to bug you …. then you think, well, that door is always open … I’d have to spray the plates and hinges .. you know where I’m going …. it looks lovely as is … that Hometalk post is where I first found your blog, so thank you! 😀
Exactly! Plus it would be super tricky to paint (it is custom and inserted really well into that opening). Glad I like the brass!
What a lovely room you have for the festive season, I particularly love the sleds.
Thanks, Cheryl! I was so lucky when I stumbled upon those for a few dollars each!
Very nice and cozy!
Thanks, Kathy!
I absolutely love all you’ve done. I have always wanted to whitewash our brick fireplace but the wall goes up around 20 feet……and the family doesn’t understand! I also love to use windows and old sleds at Christmas time! Your family room looks great! xo Kathleen
Thanks so much, Kathleen! 20 feet is pretty intimidating lol!
It looks very nice. Having meaningful decorations make it home.
I must agree! I love that my tree is full of old ornaments that bring back memories 🙂
Very very nice. The before and after shots are pretty amazing. I am preparing for a wood floor replacement and my brain is whirling with thoughts of solid wood, engineered floor, bamboo, click, nailed, glued, floating….etc. It is all too much to process. Which method did you use ? Can you share the name of the color of the floors ? And I do love your brick job. I was planning on using a stone veneer to cover my brick, but if I could get mind to look like this, I would love it and save lots of money. Did you use your chalkpaint on the brick or some other type of paint ? Great job girl !!
Hi KJ, We used hardwood engineered flooring. Our family room is on a concrete slab and this was the only way to go. We used a plastic covering and put the hardwood on top of it. It is called Hand Scraped Oak – Gunstock, Engineered Hardwood by Home Legend and we purchased it at Home Depot. I used Annie Sloan chalk paint in Old White that I diluted to make the wash. I hope this helps!
I like your room. I have no idea if brass is in or out but it looks good.
Thanks so much, Wendy!
