The French Lane Cedar Chest

24 January, 2014 by Suzanne

What a gorgeous, vintage French Lane Cedar Chest.  I believe the pictures say it all with this one! What a fantastic piece for any room – especially a bedroom.  This is a very large cedar chest with ample storage space.  In the spring, I am always trying to find room in the closets for all of the duvets in the house that need to be put away for the summer.  Even a king size duvet would fit easily into this chest with plenty of room to spare.Vintage Cedar Chest www.thepainteddrawer.comCedar Chest www.thepainteddrawer.com

The chest came out so beautiful! Did you prime the chest with shellac? My local Anne Sloan dealer told me I should do that to mine to keep the oils in the cedar from bleeding through. Thanks for sharing your awesome work.

Hi Lin, thanks so much! I didn’t paint over the actual cedar as I didn’t paint the interior. The outside is a hardwood, which I painted. I don’t apply shellac prior to painting my pieces. However, if the piece is a very reddish wood or heavily oiled, it’s a good idea – especially if you are painting over it in a light color and want uniform paint coverage. Otherwise, the red finish or oil can bleed through. FYI – you can apply the shellac after painting (on top of the bleed through) and paint another coat on top of the shellac (if you didn’t apply it initially).

It’s fabulous. And I said to keep it red, it was so pretty. Was I ever wrong. It is absolutely gorgeous. One of your best ever pieces.

The grey over red is really pretty. I’d love to know how you did that, chipping the grey without taking off the red, too.
I’d love for you to share some of your awesome projects at my link party. The very first one is this Friday, Jan 31st, at FlyingC-DIY.com
