Whether you’re considering moving house in 2023, or are simply looking to improve your living situation, now is the perfect time to carry out some simple home repair tasks. There are various reasons for this, for example:
- Your home is ready for the new year. Carrying out these tasks now means that you can start the new year on the right foot – in a home that feels brand new!
- You can save money. This is because “you will be more likely to get a discount during this time of year than during the dryer months when contractors are busy.”
- Home repairs should not be delayed. Carrying out home repairs sooner rather than later gives you the chance to limit their impact on your property (and bank account), as it lowers the amount of damage they can cause.
With that in mind, here are three home repairs you should carry out before the new year.
Replace missing roof tiles.
If during your latest home inspection, you noticed that your roof has seen better days, now is the time to tackle this issue. After all, issues such as missing roof tiles are likely to present more issues during the winter months, as they provide a way for draughts and cold air to enter your home. As such, replacing these tiles will keep you warm, while also protecting your home from the elements. You may also want to remove moss from the surface of your roof tiles, as this can lead to structural damage in the future through the build-up of moisture on the surface of your roof.
Fix that leaking pipe.
A leaking pipe is often viewed as an annoyance – especially if you can hear it dripping constantly. However, these issues are putting your home at risk of flooding, while also driving up your water bill at a time when utility bills are notoriously high. As such, you should resolve to remedy any plumbing issues, such as leaking or faulty pipes before the year is out. To do this, it’s best to do some research ahead of time to discover who the best plumbing contractors in your area are. This way, you’ll know you’re bringing someone you can trust into your home, and that all duties will be carried out to an exceptionally high standard.
Replace your fire or smoke alarms. Many homeowners have fire or smoke alarms installed within their home, but fail to replace them when they’re faulty or the batteries die out. In fact, a recent study found that “16% of homeowners have never tested their smoke detector and 20% admit to disconnecting it completely.” While this may not seem like much of an issue, the sooner you are aware of potential fires or hazards in your home, the better. As a result, take some time to test all of the alarms within your property, such as your carbon monoxide, smoke and fire alarms. Without them, you may not be alerted to a catastrophe until it is too late. Thankfully, if you do notice that any of them are broken or faulty, these issues can be resolved quickly, often by replacing batteries.
