The bathroom is often one of the smallest rooms in the house and one of the most important to get right. Remodeling a bathroom can be expensive, so you need to make sure you get it right the first time.
Here are some tips on redesigning your bathroom.
What will the bathroom be used for?
OK, that does sound like a bit of a strange question. Surely it’s self-explanatory, its a bathroom. But just think about it for a moment. Yes, the bathroom is somewhere where you use the toilet, brush your teeth and wash, but it’s also so much more than that.
If you love a long, luxurious bath, then designing your bathroom around a fantastic statement bath is important to get the atmosphere and comfort that you want.
If it is the main family bathroom then, you may want to install a separate shower and think about safety features and fittings that are more hard-wearing and easier to clean.
Is accessibility an issue you need to consider? If you have elderly relatives or a condition affecting mobility, then having an accessible bathroom is a must.
Find your style inspiration
Once you know how your bathroom is going to be used, and by who, it’s time to get creative and decide on a ‘look’ for your bathroom. Some of the best places to look are:
- Social media – Instagram and Pinterest are particularly good
- Bathroom and plumbing websites – like Tradewindsimports.com let you see their fixtures and fittings in situ, rather than just a separate image of the product
- Interior design magazines
Choosing your fixtures
Most bathrooms will have some combination of a bath, sink, shower, and toilet. Your shower may be over your bath or a separate enclosure. Some people don’t have baths at all, either because of limited space or that they simply don’t take baths.
Armed with your bathroom design plan and decoration ideas you’ve pulled together, look for fixtures that fit your style and budget and then style the rest of your bathroom around these.
Think about storage
We have so many different toiletries and accessories now, it’s easy to make the most stylish bathroom look a cluttered mess by piling up bottles and towels on every available surface. And often, a bathroom wall cabinet just won’t cut it.
It’s always better to have too much storage than too little. If you have space, then freestanding bathroom shelves with decorative baskets can hide a multitude of practical items as well as decorative ones.
Use the space under the sink as well, either by using a vanity with a sink built into it, or a freestanding unit under a wall-mounted sink.
Lighting
This is often an afterthought and is why some of the most unflattering lightings in houses are found in bathrooms. If you don’t have a lot of natural light coming into your bathroom, then look for muted lights that aren’t too harsh. Lighting around a vanity mirror is useful for applying makeup.
