Your home is your castle, and your own corner of the world – a place where you can feel completely welcome, and structure things exactly as you want them to be structured.
Now, that all sounds great in theory – but as everyone knows, your home can just as easily become a total mess, with a dark, irritating energy that you would seriously prefer not to have to deal with after a long day at work.
Here are a few things all make all the difference in how your home feels, so that you can have a good time there, and feel good there, instead of the opposite.
- Get any pests removed as soon as possible
If your home was infested by giant rats that ran around in the daytime, there’s no doubt that you would have that infestation dealt with as soon as humanly possible. For many other, less dramatic or visible pests, though, the removal process can be a lot slower – mostly because of our own inattention and procrastination.
Be sure, though, that if your home houses a colony of cockroaches, for example, cockroach removal is going to be one of the best things you could do to change the mood and atmosphere of the place in a hurry.
For one thing, you’ll probably spend a lot less time getting sick, and for another thing, you wouldn’t have to worry about the uncomfortable experience of going to the kitchen at night and finding bugs crawling around.
Some pests, of course, almost never make themselves visible, but can literally destroy your home. Termites are the classic example.
- Take air quality seriously, and consider getting portable air purifiers and plenty of houseplants
The quality of the air found inside of our homes is something that we typically don’t give much thought to at all. For the most part, “bad air quality” is only associated with busy roads, or factories, or chemical spills — stuff like that.
As a matter of fact, though, many indoor environments have absolutely abysmal air quality, due to a combination of dust mites, mould spores, pet dander, gases released by domestic appliances, aerosols, and more.
“Sick Building Syndrome” is a term that refers to a series of health conditions that can absolutely floor people when they spend too much time breathing in contaminated indoor air.
As it turns out, though, NASA has done a “Clean Air Study,” and found that many common houseplants are remarkably good at decontaminating the air. Consider getting a good selection of houseplants, and a portable air purifier or two, and you might notice that your health and mood improve quickly and significantly.
- Declutter – empty space can contribute greatly to peace of mind
It’s pretty easy for your home environment to end up cluttered, these days. After all, there’s more stuff to buy than there ever has been before, and a lot of it can be purchased online with next day delivery, from an almost endless catalogue of goods.
If your home feels at all cluttered to you, set yourself a mission of actively decluttering it. Get rid of stuff that you automatically recognise to be junk. Then, get rid of the stuff that isn’t very useful to you, and that doesn’t have emotional value to you, either.
Empty space can contribute greatly to peace of mind. Often, just having fewer things in a room will seem to give you more internal space to think, and to actually enjoy being in your home.
