As long as you live in a self-contained place or on the top floor of a building, you will have a roof above your head. This part of the building is incredibly important, keeping the elements out, while also ensuring that warm air stays in. Maintaining your roof is crucial.
What Can Go Wrong?
There are a lot of different things that can go wrong when you don’t look after your roof. Some of the results are obvious, while others don’t seem initially connected to your roof. This makes it crucial that you have a good understanding of them all.
Leaks: This first one is more obvious than the rest, with leaks forming wherever they have the chance, and a bad roof is a prime spot for this. Cracked or missing tiles, warping, and a range of other issues can cause leaks. When a leak builds up for a long time without you noticing, it will usually cause a huge amount of damage, and repairing this can cost you a small fortune.
Falling Tiles: The tiles on your roof can be secured in a number of ways, though they are often largely held in place by the weight of the tiles around them. Sitting like a giant puzzle, it doesn’t take much to disrupt this, often causing tiles to fall to the floor when the wind picks up. Not only can this hurt people who are near your home, but it can also cause major leaks and cost a small fortune to repair.
Bad Odors: Not a lot of people realize it, but a chimney presents an excellent place for a bird or other animals to nest. They can easily find themselves trapped in this space, though, as they will often fall and be unable to find their way out. Unfortunately, this will often result in the death of the animal, filling your home with the smell of a rotting corpse. Have your roofer add a cover / grate over your chimney top to prevent animals from accessing it.
Appearance: Finally, it’s time to think about the way your home looks. Most people want their place to look great, rather than having holes in the roof and cracked tiles. There are so many fantastic roofing options now and a new roof can seriously transform the look of a home. While this isn’t an easy or inexpensive job, the results are always worth it.
Monitoring
Monitoring is one of the best tools you have when it comes to keeping a roof in good condition. This will enable you to spot problems before they fully form, while also giving you the chance to stop things like leaks when they are about the cause major problems. If you’re scared of heights and for safety (especially if your home has a very high rooftop) it makes sense to hire a professional to climb onto your roof every year to give you a head’s up to any problems forming.
Repairing
When you see something which looks wrong on your roof, it will be crucial that you repair it as soon as possible. Not only will this enable you to avoid the issues which can come when the problems get worse, but it will also ensure that you don’t have to pay huge amounts as further damage is caused. Residential roofers can be found in just about every city and town, with loads of companies offering great services for very little in terms of cost.
