I wrote a post a few years ago Tear Down That Wall! and I am finally here to share that the wall has been torn down! Well, at least part of it has been taken down. We decided to create a pass through from the kitchen to the family room. This way the flooring did not have to be messed with and it created a more useful space.
Breaking through from the kitchen to the family really opened the space. It makes both rooms feel so much bigger and brighter. I love having the extra counter to place items on and for entertaining, it is perfect.
Here is the “before”…
The opening was created between two outlets on the kitchen wall so other than an old phone box, there was nothing major inside the wall that had to be moved. Once the opening was created, my husband went to the lumber yard to purchase all of the lumber and molding we needed. After he cut and nailed it into place, I used caulk and paint to finish it up.
We already painted our cabinets a brighter white and added the subway tile. We have one more piece of molding to place back. Our next project will be installing the floating shelves. Once those are up, we can place all of our plates, etc. up and out of the way (you can see how they are placed on a rack for the time being).
And here we are today!
Now I would like to replace our countertops and have new flooring throughout the space to make it more cohesive. Time to save those pennies 🙂

Thanks so much! We whitewashed the brick years ago – so glad we did. Huge improvement from the dark brick!

Very cozy and inviting! Amazing what adding to an opening can do…just feels like everyone is a part of what’s going on in the other room!!! Nice!
Suzanne
Thanks Karolyn!

I realize that life is constantly changing and nothing stays the same, but I sure miss your more frequent posts. I’ve enjoyed them so much. Sigh!
Suzanne
Hi Sher, that is so kind of you to say! I will try harder in 2019 for balance with both jobs and hope to post more this year. I do appreciate your comment – it gives me the motivation I need!
Debra
It does look so much lighter and brighter.

Thanks, Debra!
