The summer might still seem like a long way off for those of you who live in the northern hemisphere. But that doesn’t mean you should ignore it. The changes you make in your house today can have tremendous ramifications on how comfortable you feel in a few months from now.
Creating a cooler room that looks stylish at the same time isn’t as straightforward as you might imagine. You want it to function correctly, but you also want it to look great too.
Rip Out Your HVAC Ducting And Start Again
HVAC systems are ideal for keeping your home cool, but the ducting that comes with them can be a real drain on the way that a room looks. If your duct work protrudes into your room and you have the budget, ripping it out and replacing it with a system that relies on a hole in the wall behind the unit is a much better and less invasive idea. I would like to do this in our powder room, eventually. https://www.researchgate.net/publication has more information.
Fall In Love With Sheer or Room Darkening Drapes
Sheer is one of the most fantastic curtain materials in existence. Not only is it perfect for anyone going for a shabby chic look, but it also helps to keep rooms feeling fresh too.
Sheer drapes are, as you know, white. For that reason, you can use them to reflect sunlight coming into your windows by simply closing them during the day. Then, when you walk into your rooms after a busy day, they feel noticeably colder than outside.
If your room faces the sun in the hot afternoon, room darkening drapes are likely the way to go. I like to search thrift stores and find lined or heavy drapes that are obviously great quality and were originally expensive.
Tile Your Floors
Carpets might be great for cozy winter evenings, but they can get annoying in the height of summer, mainly because of their habit of insulating heat.
Tile floors, on the other hand, don’t suffer from this issue. They remain cool throughout the day, providing a kind of natural, indoor refrigeration system. I know in warmer climates, concrete flooring is becoming pretty fashionable, and tile floors are always in style.
Add A Ceiling Fan
In recent years, ceiling fans have come along substantially. They’re no longer these enormous brown lumps that hang down from your light fittings. Instead, they come in a range of styles and colors designed to complement practically any room.
Sites like https://www.palmfanstore.com/brand/TroposAir-Ceiling-Fans provide examples of the kind of thing you can expect. Notice that the designs are a lot sleeker than in the past. Ceiling fans, therefore, don’t impose as much on rooms as they once did. Instead, they feel more like a natural part of them.
Use Cooling Tones
Of course, there’s a limit to how much you can do to keep your rooms fresh in the summer. However, there are ways that you can make them feel fresher – at least psychologically.
Painting your rooms a cool color, like blue, for instance, can help to take some of the heat out of them. Adding pictures of scenes depicting cold weather can also help – some long as they’re not holiday-themed.
If you have the budget, you can also try things like including running water in your indoor spaces, such as an indoor fountain to give you the feeling of refreshing water.
Cooling a room stylishly and making your home comfortable for the summer months ahead!
