There are all sorts of different problems that can crop up in life, and that can throw you off track and keep you from achieving your goals and living the way you want.
These problems can range from health issues, to setbacks professionally, to things that have gone wrong around the home, to all sorts of plans that have, in the end, been shown up as faulty in one way or another.
Of course, each individual problem youâre faced with will need an individual solution, but there are nonetheless various general principles that can go a long way in helping you to effectively deal with all sorts of different problems across all sorts of different dimensions of your life.
Here are a few principles for effectively dealing with all sorts of problems.
Always take action when you first notice the cracks forming
One of the key reasons why so many dramatic issues end up developing in the first place, is because action wasnât taken to address them when they were still only minor issues.
A lot of the time, youâll have some pretty clear signs that things arenât quite right, and that thereâs something you should be doing. When you heed those warnings and address those issues head-on, as you notice the first âcracksâ forming, you can often avert a major catastrophe down the line.
Often, itâs actually quite straightforward to deal with an issue in its infant stages, even if itâs not necessarily going to be something that you feel like doing.
If you have a serious pest infestation in your home, that can be a real issue and can require a lot of work to address. Depending on the type of infestation, the very structural integrity of your home could be threatened â such as in the case of termites, for example. Contacting a professional pest control agency when you first notice signs of a potential infestation can save you a vast amount of time and money down the line.
Likewise, if thereâs an ominous envelope that comes for you in the mail, the sooner you open it and address it, the less likely it is to actually end up being a catastrophic problem for you. But if, on the other hand, you decide to put that envelope in the corner and ignore it for weeks or months, something dramatically unpleasant might be coming your way.
If in doubt, focus on the things you know you should stop doing, rather than things you think you should be doing
Whenever you are faced with a particular problem, it can be difficult to figure out what you âshouldâ be doing in order to proactively deal with or avert that problem.
Instead of getting caught up in the process of overthinking and trying to figure out just how you should go about things, though, take a more straightforward path of stopping doing the things that youâre pretty sure you shouldnât be doing, and that are likely contributing to your situation.
For example, if youâve ended up in a situation where your schedule is completely upside down and youâre constantly getting too little sleep, answering a general-purpose question such as âhow can I master my time?â Is going to be pretty tricky.
On the other hand, you can almost certainly think of individual actions you perform on a regular basis that have contributed to you being up too late at night, being too inefficient in the early part of the day, and so on.
Maybe you need to stop surfing the web or watching TV after work. Or maybe you need to stop eating processed foods that give you energy crashes throughout the day.
Of course, itâs not easy to let go of bad habits â it is usually a lot more straightforward to figure out what you might be doing wrong, than to figure out what you should be doing right.
Avoid multitasking
Multitasking is, in theory, a way of juggling various different tasks at once so that you can be more efficient with your time, have a more productive life, and get more things done.
In reality, though, researchers have demonstrated clearly that multitasking is not only mentally unhealthy, but that it also increases the likelihood of errors, and makes people less effective at whatever it is theyâre trying to do.
Multitasking can often be the reason why you overlook certain details that then end up spiralling into major problems.
If, instead, you focused on one thing at a time and gave it as much of your attention as possible, you would likely be far more diligent and effective in what youâre doing, and would avoid many potential issues that could otherwise develop.
Actively plan and keep track of things
If you try to remember everything that you need to get done, just off the top of your head, you will inevitably miss things from time to time and will fail to maintain the degree of insight that allows you to be productive and to stay on top of lifeâs challenges.
Instead, make a point of actively planning and keeping track of things using a system such as the Bullet Journal Method, or David Allenâs Getting Things Done method, that allows you to properly organize your various obligations, appointments, notes, and to-dos.
When youâve got things organised in this way, not only will you be more likely to avoid problems in the first place, but youâll be much more effective at actually dealing with them once theyâve developed, too.
Just get started
When youâve got a particular problem to deal with, itâs very easy to get caught up in overthinking, and in trying to figure out the perfect nuanced way of addressing things and coming to terms with the situation.
Unfortunately, this kind of response can often keep you from ever actually making progress in addressing the problem itself.
When it comes to addressing a problem, itâs often a good idea to just get started whether or not you think you have all the answers laid out. Of course, be careful about actions that might have a significantly negative outcome. But, all the same, donât wait to come up with the perfect solution in theory.
