Protecting your home from the weather is so important if you want to avoid serious maintenance issues in the future. We all know that the winter can be a dangerous time for our homes because the risk of a big storm is much higher but have you thought about the impact that the sun can have on your home? Most people assume that they don’t need to worry about weather damage in the summer but that isn’t the case. In fact, the heat can be just as damaging as the cold and rain. These are some of the different ways that hot weather can damage your home.
Foundation Problems
Foundation problems are very serious and usually very expensive to fix, so you need to avoid them at all costs. Unfortunately, the hot weather can do a lot of damage because the foundations of your home use the surrounding soil for support. In the hot weather, the soil dries up and the moisture evaporates, so the soil shrinks away from the foundations and they lose that support. Over time, this can lead to cracks in your foundations, which are tough to repair. The good news is, this is quite easy to avoid. You need to make sure that there is always some moisture around the perimeter of the house, so get a sprinkler system installed to keep it consistent. You should also remove any large trees that are close to the house because the roots will suck up even more moisture.
Roof Damage
After a big storm, it’s always important to check your roof for damage. But you should also keep an eye on the roof during a warm spell because long term exposure to UV rays can cause the roof tiles to degrade. The hot weather also causes the wood to warp, which can lead to serious issues with your roof. It’s important to get up there on a regular basis to check for problems and, if you do notice anything, call out some contractors to deal with it for you. Roof maintenance is so important and you can’t afford to make any mistakes, so if there is damage, leave it to the professionals to fix it for you.
Plumbing Problems
Plumbing problems are very common in the winter when pipes freeze over and crack, but the hot weather also puts a lot more strain on your plumbing. When the weather is warm, you use a lot more water for things like sprinklers, hose pipes or even swimming pools if you are lucky enough to have one. This extra pressure makes your pipes more likely to burst and pressure on your foundations can also cause damage to the pipes. It’s important that you check the plumbing regularly and fix any small issues as they arise. You should also call in a professional plumber to check your pipes at least once a year so you can identify any big problems and head them off before you end up with a burst pipe on your hands.
Protecting your home from cold weather and rain is important but don’t underestimate the damage that can be caused by the hot weather as well.
