Those of you with interest in interior design will find it amusing how carpets seemed to be in-fashion, go wildly out of fashion, then swing back into fashion! Nowadays, we’re blessed with so many amazing flooring options for the home, but carpets are a firm favorite due to their diversity, comfort, safety, and affordability.
Most carpet critics will all have the same problem; carpets don’t last as long as harder floorings. While this can be true, you can easily extend the life of your carpets by following some simple steps. Lucky for you, I’ve listed the steps in this post!
Step 1: Clean your carpet every week
Most issues with carpets stem from a lack of cleaning. In just a few days, you can have so much dirt and debris lingering in the carpet fibers. To make matters worse, you walk all over it and push these things deeper into the surface. As a result, it creates a weakness in the fibers, which leads to patches and wear & tear.
You can prevent this by getting into the routine of cleaning your carpets at least once per week. Ideally, do it twice a week to keep them in the best condition, and you’ll see incredible results. The video below can give you some tips on how to get rid of a few common carpet stains on your own:
Step 2: Get professional cleaning for your carpets every year at least
As well as cleaning your carpets by yourself, you need to get them professionally cleaned quite regularly. Once per year is the minimum, but most people should get it done at least two or three times in this same period.
No matter how hard you try, you’ll never properly clean your carpets with common tools at home. Instead, you need a company like Cleanville Carpet Care to come along and use professional cleaning equipment. This gives your carpets a deep clean, keeping the fibers in excellent condition and ensuring they last much longer.
Step 3: Avoid wearing shoes on your carpets
Walking on carpets will obviously wear them down. Of course, you can’t avoid doing this! But, you can avoid walking on carpets with shoes or sneakers on your feet. Walking in socks or with bare feet will do way less damage than shoes do. Obviously, shoes are hard and contain lots of dirt, etc. So, they wear the carpet down far quicker and will make it a lot filthier – leading to a shorter lifespan.
All you need to do is take your shoes off when you enter the home! It’s a simple thing to do, and you may want to think about having hardwood flooring in your hallway – or other areas of your home with loads of foot traffic. Carpets don’t have to be everywhere, especially if they’ll just get worn down due to repeated use!
For pet stains, I highly recommend the carpet cleaner, Folex. I wrote about my experience with it here. I also recommend the Bissell Spotclean Proheat cleaner. It’s small and easy to use and it did a great job on that same poor rug after our other dog had an accident on it. I also spotcleaned our sectional in the living room and was happy with the result.
