We often start to think about plans for big changes around the house in the New Year. You might have projects that you want to get on with, improvements that you’d like to make, and changes to your home that you are eager to start. One big project that most of us tackle at some point is a significant garden restoration. You might be looking to make big changes, such as a total remodel, or you might want to turn a previously unloved and neglected garden into somewhere that you and your family can spend time relaxing, entertaining and having fun. But, garden projects aren’t the same as decorating inside your home. They can take more planning, and mean a lot more hard work. Here are some things that you might want to consider when thinking about a big garden renovation.
Make Some Plans
Like any home renovation, plans are a good idea. You don’t just want to start tearing your garden apart without knowing what you want to achieve and how you are going to do it. Spend some time thinking about what you want from your new garden. Think of elements that you’d like to keep, and things that you’d like to change completely, and ask yourself what you want to use your new garden for. Do you want to eat outdoors? Would you like a space to exercise or practice a creative hobby? You might even want to work with a professional to help you design your dream garden.
Let More Sun In
A garden that gets plenty of sun is somewhere that we can grow flowers, fruits, and other plants. It’s somewhere that we are keen to spend more time, and where we can sit out in the summer months. The amount of sun you get will largely depend on where you live, and which direction your home faces. But, there are still things that you can do to help. If you’ve got large sun-blocking trees, you might need Tree Surgeons to come and help you cut back.
Don’t Forget Seating
All of the best gardens have seating. How else are you going to enjoy your new outdoor space comfortably? Go back to those thoughts on what you’d like to use your garden for, and think about how much space you’ve got to work with before deciding what kind of seating you’d like. You might want an outdoor dining table and chairs, sun loungers, and even outdoor sofas and hammocks if you’ve got the room.
Consider a Theme
Do you want your garden to have a theme? This can be a strict theme such as a Japanese ornamental garden, or something more relaxed like adding plenty of bright colors. You don’t have to stick to a theme entirely, and you might want to add different elements to your garden. A Pinterest board can help you to organize your ideas and explore options that you might not have considered.
Start Early
You might be tempted to leave any garden work until the weather is getting better. But, starting early means that you are ready to plant so that your garden is fully alive by summertime.
