Having someone break into your home can be devastating. It might make you feel unsafe and it could mean you’ve lost some valuable items. You likely have some mess to clean up too. After you’ve called the police, there are some pressing things to take care of to get your home in order and help you to feel safe again. The faster you take action, the sooner you can get your home back to normal and sit down to relax. But what should you do first? Here are some of the things that you should do to get your home back in order.
Tidy Up
A break-in can leave your home looking pretty messy. Burglars don’t tend to be particularly careful about what they do with your stuff or whether they break anything. They just want to find your valuables and get in and out as soon as possible. So one of the things that you will want to do fairly quickly is tidy up. Before you do this, you might want to take some photos or even wait for the police to arrive. But once you’ve taken care of these tasks, you can start to clean up and set everything straight.

Take an Inventory
During cleaning up or after you’ve finished, it’s a good idea to take stock of what’s gone. This will be helpful for the police, your insurance provider, and your own knowledge too. It’s not always easy to know what’s gone right away. If you don’t have a full inventory of everything in your home, you don’t have anything to compare against. However, you probably have a good idea of most of the valuable things in your home and where you keep them, so you should be able to tell most things that are missing. Take some time to have a look and think about it.
Repair or Replace Your Locks
When someone has broken into your home, it often means that they have broken your locks. If not, they might have got hold of a key to your home. So changing or rekeying your locks might be one of the first things that you want to do to feel safer. Installing a robust lock like a Mul T Lock will ensure your home is protected. As well as new locks, you might want to take some other security measures. Maybe you want to install a new security system or alarm for extra safety.
Call Your Insurance Provider
Your home insurance provider will probably be one of the first calls that you make after a break-in. You’ll need to get in touch with them if you want to make a claim for the things you’ve lost or any repairs that need to be made. Some insurance providers might allow you to start a claim online, which can make things easier and save you some time. They will probably be looking for evidence of your claim, which could include a police report, receipts, or photographs.
After a break-in, start getting things in order so you can put your home to rights and feel safe again.
