Adding artwork to your home is a lovely way to improve the interior design. The beauty of art is that it’s timeless and can transform the look and feel of any room in your house. Art is also a talking point, sparking conversations with guests. It’s also just nice to look and admire, perhaps acting as inspiration for any art enthusiasts out there!
With so much art in the world, how do you decide which pieces to add to your home? It comes down to personal preference and tastes, but there are a few golden rules you might like to follow:
Buy directly from the artist
The bad thing about the abundance of art in the world is that lots of people take advantage of other people’s talents. For example, someone may sell someone else’s art, passing it off as their own. Or, they buy it from the artist, then sell it for a profit. Plus, even official stores that sell art might give the artist a very small share of the sale. So, the best approach is to buy directly from the artist.
How do you do this? Well, you can start by looking for art online, and you’ll soon find websites set up by artists. Always frame and protect paintings
Any art paintings you buy need to be framed immediately before they are put on the wall. This means finding an appropriate frame, though one could be included when you buy the piece. The reason this is so important is that it protects the art and makes it maintain the same quality for as long as possible. If a painting or picture is left without any protection, it can soon fade and look worse for wear. Not only is this bad for you, but it’s a bit insulting to the artist.
Keep art out of direct sunlight
When choosing where you place your art, be sure you keep it away from direct sunlight. Again, this is for similar reasons to above; keeping art in sunlight will diminish its quality. If you have an expensive piece, it can quickly lose all of its value after a few days in the sun. The colours will be bleached, everything is faded – it’s a waste of money! This goes for pretty much all forms of art as well. Even sculptures should be moved out of direct sunlight because it can alter the way it looks. If you want art to look as beautiful as possible, ensure the sun doesn’t directly hit it through the window.
Armed with these golden rules, you can place incredible artwork around your home. Don’t overdo it – too much art can make your home look like a modern gallery. It’s also wise to follow a theme – e.g. have a selection of modern art or go down the classical route.
