I’m done and sharing my finished powder room floor! It has been painted in Annie Sloan chalk paint. I used Country Grey as a base color and then a coat of Coco was applied. My linoleum floor (like a lot of older linoleum floors) has a textured finish and I used that to my advantage. I mixed Old White into the Coco to create a lighter color that I dry brushed on top. It created the look of real stone and I love it!
I then used Annie Sloan lacquer to seal the paint. The product is specifically for painted floors and is water resistant. It has no odor, is non-yellowing and so easy to apply! Here is my YouTube tutorial that takes you through the entire project. It shows how to brush on the paint to give it that faux stone look.
Remember the before?For less than $100, I have a new floor!Have a great weekend!

Excellent video and super results! Amazing how much the vinyl looks like stone!
The swishing sound of the paint brush during your drybrushing even sounded like you were working on stone.

Thanks, Sharlee!

Looks beautiful!! Great video showing how you did it too, that always helps those of us that want to try something new…or it does me. Thanks for sharing!

You are so ingenious!! Love your blog!!

Wow! Thanks so much!

That looks fantastic! I’m sure you have probably already mentioned this in a previous post, but could you give a little explanation of how dry brushing works? Are you using her brushes for all of the steps? Thanks!
Suzanne
Hi Lisa, I don’t actually use her brushes. I like my Wooster brush from Home Depot that has a smaller handle. Dry brushing is when you dip only the very tips of the bristles into the paint and then brush it over an existing coat. I show how on the video – hope it helps!
Suzanne
I also did a video on how to make a plastic mirror look like weathered wood and used dry brushing on that video as well. Thanks!

Wow, looks really good Suzanne! It’s got the old wheels churning in my head because we have perfectly good ceramic tiles in both our bathrooms but we don’t like the color and want to unify both bathrooms with the same tiles. Up until watching this we planned to rip out the tile and replace with new. Ceramic being a porous surface I’m thinking should take chalk paint quite nicely.
Questions for you…
1) does the lacquer have a glossy finish?
2) why did you paint a “solid” coat of coco over the country grey – can you see any of it beneath?
3) could you have gotten away with painting the entire floor in coco followed by dry brushing the coco/old white combination for contrast?
Suzanne
Hi Marie, I actually put the Country Grey on because I thought I wanted that color but then decided it was too blah. So, on with the Coco and yes, you could just put the Coco on directly and forgo the Country Grey. The lacquer definitely has a finish but it is not too glossy. It is almost like a light sheen. I would maybe test it on something first and see what you think. It is water resistant but not waterproof so in a bathroom where you will be stepping out of a shower with wet feet it may wear more. Unless, of course, you step onto a mat. You can always try it and see what you think prior to the ripping out of the tile. It is a lot easier and cheaper and if you don’t like it then do what you were going to with replacing the floor. I bet you will be pleased with the result – I was really happy with it myself!

Thanks so much! I am glad you liked the video as it takes a lot of time to film and it makes me happy to think it is worth it! Cheers!

I will be trying this out- can I use any type of brush or roller to apply paint? Also how well has it held up since u have done this- I’m nervous not very crafty- also I read where we wouldn’t need the gray to achieve the same look? Is that correct? Would u suggest 2 coats of the coco then? I have never used chalk paint
Suzanne
Hi Judy, You should use a brush and not a roller. It has held up really, really well. I made a YouTube tutorial on the process and the steps are all laid out as well as the paint I used. I buy my AS chalk paint from Catfish Studios in Gaithersburg, MD and there info is on the video. Cheers and best of luck! http://www.youtube.com/user/thepainteddrawer

How long did it take for your top coat to dry? We only have one bathroom with 5 people in our house so it is hard to have our bathroom out of commission for more than 8 hours. Any suggestions?
Suzanne
It is a recommended 24 hour dry time. However, it was pretty dry after 8 and I think you could do it. Make sure to only apply a light coat nd not too thick so dry time is faster. Best of luck!
Taina
Hi, I have been researching redoing my old linoleum and vinyl floors for awhile. I found that it is quit the process. Cleaning, sanding, priming, painting and then sealing. I have read mixed reviews on floors holding up. Now I discovered Annie Sloan Chalk paint. My flooring has a texture but is shiny..do I have to sand it or will it hold the paint without doing so. I hate the idea of sanding…who knows what’s In those old floors, especially with small children. If so, I will just have to wait until we put in new flooring. This would be painted in high traffic areas. In a kitchen, bathroom and porch/laundry area. However I would seal it with varathane. It is a high traffic, non yellowing floor sealer or polycrylic. Other bloggers have suggested using this with in high traffic areas or on cabinets or furniture used a lot like the kitchen. I also have a family of 5 and only one bathroom until we add on, any pointers are appreciated! Thank you!!
Suzanne
Hi Taina – do not sand them. They could have toxic material in them. Best to paint right over. I sealed mine with Annie Sloan Floor Lacquer and it is still holding strong. And this is in my main floor powder room that gets a lot of traffic. It doesn’t yellow and was super easy to apply. Best of luck to you!
