I shared these tables with you a few weeks ago. My client asked me to do them along the lines of the French Cedar Blanket Chest. They were perfect for this finish.
I used Annie Sloan chalk paint in Provence but I changed it up by applying it over Martha Stewart’s Antique Gold and by using both clear and dark waxes. It became a very french finish!Using the two tones of wax gave the pieces more depth and character and the hue of the paint changes in the light. They were also distressed to show off their gorgeous detail. The pulls were missing and I found these beautiful replacement chippendale pulls online at D.Lawless Hardware. Their elegance are the perfect complement for the tables and give them that extra gold touch. The tops were left as-is – they were in perfect condition – and the dark, gleaming wood looks beautiful against the blue. I believe these tables show that paint can enhance a piece of furniture and bring out the beautiful detailing. Paint can add and not detract from the original beauty and style.
They are being picked up in an hour. I hope she loves them!

Gorgeous Suzanne! It looks like the top was left as is,,, is that correct or did you restain? Love these!
Suzanne
Hi Denise – I left them “as-is”. For once I worked on something that didn’t have a destroyed top!

These are beautiful, Suzanne! Your wood tops always look amazing. I just stripped and refinished a top with dark walnut and it came out blotchy and uneven. Do you have any advice on how I can fix it before sealing the top? I already tried putting a second coat of stain and that didn’t make a differnece.
Suzanne
Hi Cora, I actually didn’t do the tops. For the first time ever, the pieces I was working on had lovely, perfect tops! I’m not sure what you did wrong. You will need to sand it back again and make sure to apply Minwax Pre-Stain Conditioner on the wood before staining. This helps with it not becoming blotchy. You can also try General Finishes Gel Stains. They are easy to apply. Good luck!
Cora
Yea, I did use the conditioner. I may not have let the conditioner dry enough, but I did follow the directions which tell you to stain within 2 hours of the conditioner, and I wiped off any excess. I wondered if I should try the GF brown glaze to fix it? Idk.
Suzanne
Hi Cora, sorry I have taken so long to get back to you – crazy week here! I actually allow the conditioned to dry for at least overnight (much longer than it recommends). Some wood takes longer to dry than others. I think you should try the gel stain over your stain. You will have to use a darker stain. I really hope this helps. Best of luck!

Suzanne: I ended up using the GF Van Dyke Glaze to even things out then put a couple of coats of satin poly over it and it looks great now. It’s cheating a little but I had no time to start all over again. Another option I thought about was dark wax and hemp oil over the blotchiness. Thanks for your advice though.

Great idea and I’m so glad it worked! Well done 🙂

They are stunning Suzanne. I bet your client was thrilled with the results!
P.S. I completely agree that paint makes the details pop.
