Most of us, when we think about interior design and decorating our homes, think of painting colour, wallpapering choices and arranging the furniture in the prettiest and most practical positions. Although these things are all important interior design staples, there are other things that are often overlooked, but just as important, Let’s take a look at them.
The entrance
Most of us will ensure we have a nice front door and clean hallway, but we take very little interest in the vantage point that our guests will be seeing when they come in for the first time. This is such a shame because your hallway is the part of the house that makes the first impression for you, so it needs to be good.
With that in mind, think about decorating your hallway to be as welcoming as possible, Ensure there is a clear line of sight from the doorway through to the rest of the house, and arrange comfy things like shoe benches and sideboards out of the way.
Lighting
Lighting is something a lot of us don’t think too much about unless we’re wondering whether we have enough of it, but it can make or break the interior design of any space.
The way the light diffuses around the room can make it seem like a beautiful, light and airy space, a dungeon or somewhere in between which is why it’s so important to take the lighting element of your decor seriously. You can get the right balance by ensuring that you have plenty fo table lamps dotted around the room for evenings, and investing in reflective light fittings like crystal chandeliers or glass pendants that will diffuse the light and make the whole room sparkle not only when they’re turned on, but also when the light of the sun hits them during the day. You can never have too many lighting options.
What is not seen
Most of us focus on the things that we are bringing into a room when we’re decorating, but what about the things that are already there? Things like radiators, pipes and wiring. If you want your home to look as polished as possible, hiding these things, which can be pretty unsightly is a really good idea.
If, for example, you only think about your pipes when they’re leaking and you need to call a Ritz plumber or you only consider the broadband wires when the service has gone down, you’re doing things wrong. Good interior design means finding ingenious ways of hiding pipes and wires, Things like hiding them behind shelves or building cupboard around them so they can’t be seen – these are the touches that will make your space better than the next person’s.
Wear and tear
If you design your home without thinking about wear and tear, it’s going to get annoying and expensive. Some areas see more traffic than others which naturally means they will wear out fast if you don’t choose the right fabrics.
For example, if you want to place a rug in your hallway, a soft cotton option would not be good news, whereas a more durable mixed-fibre rug that isn’t so delicate, and which can be washed much more easily, would work well. That’s just one example, but you get the idea with this point.
