I am having a love affair with gray wood stain.
The Bassett Cabinet bottom piece was stained in Minwax Weathered Wood.
The Beach Chic Dresser was stained in Varathane Sunbleached. It’s creates a lighter coverage than the Minwax.
And, the Farmhouse Table was stained in a combo of General Finishes Walnut and Whitewash (3 parts Walnut to 1 part Whitewash). I love this combo for a true rustic gray that allows the natural wood to show through.
The farmhouse table was shipped on Thursday to its new home in Connecticut! Rescue, redesign and reinvent at its best!
Those are very pretty! I’ve got some pine furniture I’m thinking about whitewashing. Just curious why you added the walnut stain to the whitewash on the dining table? What would it have looked like without the walnut?
Hi Kelly – it would have been really white. The General Finishes whitewash is super white and the walnut tones it down to a rustic gray. You can fool around with the ratios to best suit your piece. I suggest testing it first before applying on your piece so you get the perfect tone!
I love all the different stain looks.
Once again your pieces are wonderful. I always get new ideas from you. I’m liking the gray stain.
That’s genius! About mixing some walnut stain with the whitewash…I didn’t ever think to try it. You’re THE best for sharing your knowledge with us. I look forward to every post:)
Thanks, Mimi! You should give it a try – love the result 🙂
Your work is just too beautiful !!
Thank you so much!
I love the Minwax Weathered Wood color. It’s a nice dark gray that allows the grain to come through a bit. I have a few projects I think I’ll be using that on. Thanks!
Do you have any examples of painted wood floors? I want to paint a large area in a cottage and the wood in a natural color just doesn’t blend. And it’s rough too.
Hi Dawn, no sorry I don’t. I believe that Country Living did a piece on painted floors and there is a lot of info on Pinterest. I am itching to paint mine so I may follow suit!
I’m using the sunbleached and I’m finding it very blue. Did you find you had the same problem?
Hi Jena, no, it didn’t look too blue on my pieces. However, all grays have blues in them. Maybe because I was applying them over a different color base than yours? You can add a little of the Weathered Wood stain and mix the two. Weathered Wood is thicker and definitely darker. I hope this helps!
Thank you I think I’ll try that
